The Amazon Alliance for Indigenous and Traditional Peoples, a non-profit
working to defend the rights, territories and environment of indigenous
and traditional peoples of the Amazon Basin, is currently recruiting
interns for spring 2008. We currently have 3-4 internship positions for
spring 2008.

The function of the internship program at the Amazon Alliance is to
provide office staff additional support in meeting the program mission,
goals and objectives. The Alliance focuses on coordination between its
member organizations, capacity building and advocacy. Interns hold an
important role in the Amazon Alliance functions and will learn important
current information about the Amazon Basin and its present situation,
struggles and future recommendations. Some of the general office
highlights will be:

- Large volume of communication with 9 Amazonian Countries and their
diverse indigenous and NGO organizations
- Access to cutting edge information of the Amazon Basin

- In-depth knowledge of the Amazonian Indigenous Movement

- Ability to attend high profile meetings at institutions like the
Organization of American States and the United Nations
- Interaction with over 100 international organizations at the Amazon
Forum 2008

Amazon Basin Geopolitical Researcher
Spring 2008

Job responsibilities include:

•Design research strategy with supervisor for nine Amazon Countries
•Research Alliance’s existing documents/resources from past and present
archives
•Contact member organizations to compile accurate information
•Online research
•Communicate/meet with experts from member organizations in D.C
•Assist with web layout in conjunction with Alliance staff
•Interact with high level representatives of organizations, agencies,
etc with discretion, maturity, and professionalism
•Assist with Amazon Alliance Annual meeting planning when needed
•Assist staff with hosting delegates of indigenous and traditional
leaders when they come to meet with different international bodies
including the World Bank and the Organization of American States among
others.
•Fulfill a 15hr/ 3 mo. Minimum unpaid internship
•Self-starter, independent worker who feels comfortable asking questions
and researching other topics adhering to personal interest
•Organized and able to multitask
•20-30% administrative duties (answering phones, responding to requests
from individuals for information, helping out with general tasks ) and
70-80% programmatic responsibilities

The Amazon Alliance website researcher will be responsible for the
writing, editing and compilation of content to be placed on the new
Amazon Alliance website. Research will be conducted through the use of
Amazon Alliance archives, communication with member organizations,
online research and consulting with academics and experts in the field.
The updated Amazon Alliance website is crucial for improved information
flow between North and South American member organizations and between
member organizations and the coordinating office.

The goal of the Amazon Alliance website is three fold. These goals are:
efficient communication hub for member organizations, informative and
attractive to donors and potential donors, and an educational resource
for the general public. Through this internship, you will have the
opportunity to interact with more than eighty non-governmental
organizations from North and South America who are members of the Amazon
Alliance, as well as the media, indigenous leaders, government
representatives, and the general public.
Internships require a minimum time commitment of 15-20 hours per week
for three months are open to both undergraduate and graduate students
and are unpaid. Scheduling is flexible and academic credit can be
arranged according to university guidelines.
