Communications Intern
The National Park Foundation (NPF) is the congressionally chartered non-profit partner of America's National Parks. The NPF strengthens the enduring connection between the American people and their National Parks by raising private funds, making strategic grants, creating innovative partnerships and increasing public awareness.
Each department of NPF has a dedicated intern. NPF interns work on a variety of tasks including research/development, publications, promotion and special events. Interns will also spend some of their time with administrative duties including file maintenance, handling phone inquiries, donor and financial database upkeep.
Interns are encouraged to share ideas and approaches to improve current systems and to actively get involved with other departments in addition to their own.
The Communications intern will work closely with the Communications team to create materials that position NPF as the national non-profit charitable organization supporting American’s National Parks. This internship will have an emphasis on web design, public relations (both online and hardcopy), writing, editing, content development & donor communications.
Essential Job Duties:
Intern responsibilities and focus vary depending on the department to which they are assigned. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, working on publications, events, research, development, data management, and promotions.
The Communications intern will gain experience in the following areas by assisting staff with day-to-day duties:
•Help develop materials (in both hardcopy & online) in support of NPF publicity campaigns to include communication plans, press kit materials, internal & external briefing documents, news releases, FAQ’s, etc.
•Track & package NPF media clips for distribution to core constituencies
•Support general communications including fielding inquiries, drafting donor communication, and monitoring public relations efforts
•Create & develop additional Public Relations materials to be used on the NPF website
•Assist in the redevelopment of the NPF website design
•Create & develop donor communications with a focus on different media channels including online components, magazines, brochures, etc.
Other Job Duties: On a rotation basis, interns are responsible for maintaining the office environment, including the kitchen area and mailroom, and providing (back-up) coverage for the front desk.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Effective communications skills: the ability to communicate information in writing and orally in a way that the target audience can clearly understand.
-Understanding of Basic Communication Principles: knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination methods including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral and visual media.
-Creativity: the ability to devise original, unusual, or clever ideas about a given topic or situation
-Problem Solving: the ability to combine and analyze information and accurately asses the value, importance, or quality of things as they relate to the NPF’s objectives.
-Organizational Skills: the ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish work.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: College graduate or current college student
-Minimum Experience: Background in writing, editing, public relations & web design
